Did I mention how painful is the process of replicating your Notes data (email included) if you have to VPN ?

What specifically are you complaining about? We do it all the time and there are no issues. Maybe it is just a poor implementation?
The fact that I need to authenticate with the VPN first in order to replicate Notes data.
We use Nortel VPN client to access our Email in Notes. In my previous company I could replicate Lotus over the internet. I hate it now... it makes it more complicated for end users.
